Cookbook Fundraiser

Senior Volunteer Services is proud to sponsor the Cookbook Fundraiser.

The purpose of the cookbook is to have fun and raise money to help support Senior Volunteer
Services. We are asking our volunteers to submit their favorite family recipe, along with a short
story about the recipe, and a photo. These should be submitted to your Program Director.

Advisory Council members will select recipes and stories for the book. Due to size limitations,
we may not be able to use every recipe or story submitted and may need to edit the stories to
better fit the allotted space.

Something to Cheer About Recognition Luncheon Celebrates Volunteer Spirit

More than 1,000 dedicated Senior Volunteer Services volunteers were feted this spring during the
organization’s annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Presented with the theme “Something to Cheer About,” the festive affair featured pom-poms, megaphones and even entertainment by the Miami Heat Senior Golden Oldie Dancers!

The true stars of the event were the volunteers, of course. “It’s a great way of recognizing all of the seniors for the outstanding job they do for the boys and girls – and also all the great work they do through our other programs,” said Event Co-Chair Bruce Voelkel, Board Member and principal of Banyan Elementary School. “The event was very exciting.”

Added event Co-Chair Lesley Tobin, who is also a Board Member, “We just want to show our volunteers that we appreciate everything that they do – all their hard work, their time and their compassion. The event was wonderful. Everyone really enjoyed it. Next year it
will be even bigger and better!”
According to Executive Director John Gargotta, the luncheon honored all the volunteers who serve the organization and the community throughout the year.

“Our volunteers provided more than 300,000 hours of service in the last year – a phenomenal achievement,” he said. “These volunteers have served children, frail elderly and people with a disability, incarcerated juveniles, law enforcement, other nonprofits and public agencies to help
solve some of Broward County’s most pressing needs.”

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Third Annual Edith S. Lederberg Wisdom in Action Award to Roland J. Benson, Director of Workforce Diversity/Employee Advocacy for the North Broward Hospital District. In 2006, his department was recognized
with the “Freedom to Compete Award” from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The EEOC award recognizes employers, organizations and individuals for initiatives that promote fair and open competition in the workplace.

A former Board Member and President of Senior Volunteer Services, Benson is an active volunteer in the community who has served numerous organizations, including Leadership Broward, the YMCA, Jack & Jill Nursery, Boy Scouts of America and Rotary. He was honored as Leader of the Year by the Leadership Broward Foundation in 2002.

Foster Grandparent Program in Broward County

As part of this year’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, Senior Volunteer Services highlighted the impact that our programs make in the community by honoring a number of our partner organizations with Site Recognition Awards. The honoree for the Foster Grandparent Program was Martin Luther King Elementary School, nominated by its principal, Kathy Sedlack. The comments she submitted describe the value of the program so eloquently that we would like to share a few of them with you:

“The Foster Grandparent Program at Martin Luther King Elementary School is an integral part of assisting students to succeed not only academically but also in life. The children have someone they can count on to be there every day of the school year. What better way to begin the day than with a kind word, smile or hug from the class
grandparent?

“Our grandparents not only are there to give words of encouragement but also to help students with extra practice of their academic skills. Sometimes all it takes for a child to master a skill is a little more practice and someone to give them attention, both provided by the grandparents. Students can’t wait to spend some time working with grandma or grandpa! Students get very excited when they are able to read a book to them!

“Those extra hands that volunteers provide to set up centers, prepare materials and assist with transitioning students from one activity to another are invaluable to the teachers who have the good fortune of having a grandparent in the class. As we see the grandparents leave at the end of every day, they go with a look of fulfillment and happiness, knowing they have truly made a difference in many children’s lives.”
